This year’s Open Data Day (March 3rd) made abundantly clear that city residents worldwide are eager to join with local governments to use data for the public good. From helping vulnerable seniors to finding fixes for public transportation, this year’s Open Data Day gatherings had a lot to show us about why #CitiesWinWithData.

Open data enthusiasts — including us, of course — started to count down to the big day.

Once the day arrived, many cities began sharing highlights of their open data programs and how residents could take advantage of the data resources at their disposal.

With hundreds of events being held around the world, Open Data Day gatherings in several What Works cities were a chance to tackle challenges from mapping ADA-accessible infrastructure to analyzing permitting data to help small businesses.

After such an eventful day, we loved watching a few folks wax sentimental about their open data journeys and the importance of committing to this work. It’s a “365 day per year commitment,” said the City of Las Vegas’ Enterprise Project Manager, Don Jacobson. We couldn’t agree more!
